How it works

  1. 1

    Book and pay

Pay online and tell us your country of residence and what you'd like to discuss.

  2. 2

    Slot confirmation

We confirm a time that suits your time zone and ask for the documents relevant to your case. A CA reviews them before the call.

  3. 3

    The session

On Zoom, Google Meet or a phone call, the CA goes through your status, income, treaty position and any sale or remittance you're planning.

  4. 4

    Written summary

You get a summary of the advice and next steps by email, including any forms or filings needed.

Residential status comes first

How India taxes you depends on your residential status for the year, which turns on the days you spent in India and, in some cases, your Indian income. A non-resident is taxed in India only on income that arises or is received here; a resident is taxed on worldwide income. People returning to India may be 'resident but not ordinarily resident' for a few years, which keeps most foreign income outside Indian tax.

The day-count rules have conditions that catch people out, especially in the year you move. We work out your status from your travel dates before anything else.

Treaties, TDS and moving money

India has tax treaties (DTAAs) with most countries where NRIs live. A treaty can lower Indian tax on interest, dividends and some other income, and helps you claim credit for Indian tax in your country of residence. To claim treaty rates, you usually need a tax residency certificate and a self-declaration (Form 10F under the 1961 Act).

Banks deduct tax on NRO interest, and buyers deduct tax when an NRI sells property, often more than the tax finally due. A lower deduction certificate from the Income Tax Department, applied for before the sale, can reduce it. Money in an NRO account can be repatriated up to USD 1 million a financial year, with a CA's certificate and the remittance forms (Form 15CA and 15CB under the 1961 Act).

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to file an income tax return in India?

Usually yes if your taxable Indian income is above the basic exemption limit, and it's worth filing to claim a refund of excess TDS. We tell you on the call.

Is interest on my NRE account taxable in India?

Not while you qualify as a non-resident. Interest on NRO accounts is taxable, and the bank deducts tax from it.

How do I avoid being taxed twice?

Through the tax treaty between India and your country of residence. Depending on the income, it limits the tax India can charge or lets you claim credit for Indian tax abroad. We tell you which applies and the documents you need.

Can you file my return and the remittance forms too?

Yes, as separate services. After the session we quote for the return, the CA certificate for remittance or a lower TDS application, as needed.

Can the session be at a time that suits me abroad?

Yes. Tell us your time zone when you book and we'll offer slots that work for you.

I'm moving back to India. Should I book before I return?

Yes, if you can. The year you move often decides your status for the next few years, and the timing of income, sales and account changes can make a difference.
