Micro, small or medium
Since 1 April 2025, a micro enterprise is one with investment in plant and machinery or equipment up to ₹2.5 crore and turnover up to ₹10 crore. The limits are ₹25 crore and ₹100 crore for a small enterprise, and ₹125 crore and ₹500 crore for a medium one. A business crossing either limit moves to the next category.
Investment and turnover are taken from your income tax return and GST records, and exports are left out of turnover. The classification is reviewed each year, and a change takes effect from the next financial year.
What Udyam registration gets you
Micro and small enterprises are protected by the MSMED Act, 2006 against late payment. Buyers must pay within the agreed period, which can't exceed 45 days, or pay interest at three times the bank rate, and you can file a claim on the MSME Samadhaan portal.
Udyam registration is also asked for under priority sector lending, the credit guarantee scheme for small business loans, and preferences for small enterprises in government purchases. Which benefits you can use depends on your category and activity; traders, for example, are counted mainly for priority sector lending.
Frequently asked questions
Is Udyam registration free?
Yes, the government charges nothing. Our fee covers checking your classification, choosing the activity codes and filing it correctly.
Does the Udyam certificate expire?
No. It stays valid, but the investment and turnover figures are updated each year from your income tax and GST records, which can change your category.
Can traders register?
Yes. Retail and wholesale traders can register on Udyam, mainly so they are counted for priority sector lending.
Is GST registration needed for Udyam?
Only if your business is required to register for GST. Otherwise you can register with your PAN and Aadhaar.
I have an old Udyog Aadhaar. Do I need Udyam?
Yes. Udyog Aadhaar registrations are no longer valid, so you need to register afresh on the Udyam portal.
Can one business have more than one Udyam registration?
No. An enterprise gets one Udyam registration. Its different activities, units and plants are all added to that one registration.
