How it works

  1. 1

    Check the details

We check that the name, address and bank details match your PAN and bank records, since mismatches are a common reason for delay.

  2. 2

    DGFT account

We register you on the DGFT portal with your email and mobile number, and link your PAN.

  3. 3

    Application

We fill in the IEC application with the business, branch and bank details and upload the documents.

  4. 4

    Signing and fee

You sign the application with your DSC or Aadhaar OTP, and DGFT's fee is paid online.

  5. 5

    IEC certificate

DGFT issues the IEC. We send you the certificate with a note on the yearly update and on using the IEC with customs and your bank.

When you need an IEC

Customs won't clear an import or export of goods without an IEC, and banks ask for it before handling foreign trade payments. One IEC, linked to the business PAN, covers all its branches.

Some don't need one: individuals importing or exporting for personal use, and certain government bodies, are exempt. Service exporters generally need an IEC only to claim benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy. If you're unsure, ask us before you apply.

The yearly update

Every IEC holder has to update or confirm their IEC details on the DGFT portal once a year, between April and June, even if nothing has changed. An IEC that isn't updated is deactivated, and stays so until the update is done.

Changes to the address, partners, directors or bank account should be updated on the portal as they happen. We can do the yearly update for you.

Frequently asked questions

Does an IEC need renewal?

No. It doesn't expire, but it has to be updated on the DGFT portal every year between April and June, or it is deactivated.

Can a proprietor get an IEC?

Yes. A proprietorship gets an IEC on the proprietor's PAN. A company, LLP or partnership gets one on its own PAN.

Do I need GST registration first?

No, an IEC can be issued without GST. Most importers and exporters do need GST registration to trade, though, and we can handle both.

Do I need an IEC to export services?

Generally only if you want to claim benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy, or if your bank asks for it. We tell you whether it helps in your case.

How long does it take?

We file within 1–2 working days of getting your documents. DGFT then processes the application, which can take longer if any detail needs checking.

Can I change details after the IEC is issued?

Yes. The address, bank account, branches, and partner or director details can be changed on the DGFT portal. Keep them current, since customs and banks rely on them.
