How it works

  1. 1

    Tell us about the business

What you make or sell, where, and your expected annual turnover. If you're above the limit for registration, we tell you which licence you need instead.

  2. 2

    Documents and Form A

You send the documents. We fill in Form A with the right kind of business and food categories, and share it with you to check.

  3. 3

    Filing and fee

We file the application on FoSCoS and pay FSSAI's fee for the number of years you choose.

  4. 4

    Queries or inspection

The registering authority may ask questions or inspect the premises. We draft the replies and tell you what to keep ready.

  5. 5

    Certificate

Once approved, we send you the certificate. Display it at your premises and print the number on your labels and bills.

Registration or licence?

FSSAI sorts food businesses by size. A petty food business, or one with annual turnover up to ₹12 lakh, needs basic registration. Above that, you need a state licence, and larger businesses, importers and some others need a central licence.

The turnover test covers the whole business at those premises, not just one product. If you expect to cross ₹12 lakh soon, it's usually simpler to take a state licence from the start.

After you register

Display the registration certificate where customers can see it, and print the 14-digit number with the FSSAI logo on the labels of packaged food. The number also goes on your bills and invoices.

Renew the registration before it expires, since a food business can't run on a lapsed one. If you add products, move premises or your turnover grows past the limit, the registration has to be changed or replaced with a licence.
