How it works

  1. 1

    Which licence

We look at your turnover, capacity, the kind of business and where you operate, and confirm whether you need a state or central licence.

  2. 2

    Documents and plan

You send the documents. We prepare Form B, the food safety management system plan and the annexures, and you check them.

  3. 3

    Filing

We file the application on FoSCoS and pay FSSAI's fee for the number of years you choose.

  4. 4

    Queries and inspection

The licensing authority may raise queries or inspect the premises. We draft the replies and give you a checklist for the visit.

  5. 5

    Licence

Once the licence is granted, we send it with a note on what to display, what to print on labels and what to file each year.

State licence or central licence

A food business above the basic registration limit needs a state licence, issued by the state's food safety department. Larger businesses need a central licence from FSSAI, and so do some kinds of business whatever their size, such as importers and food businesses at airports and seaports. A business with units in more than one state also needs a central licence for its head office.

The tests depend on turnover, production capacity and the kind of food business, and FSSAI revises them from time to time. We check the current criteria for your case before we file.

Keeping the licence valid

A licence is granted for one to five years. Apply for renewal before it expires, since a food business can't run on an expired licence.

Manufacturers and importers holding a licence file an annual return on FoSCoS. Changes to the premises, products or the people in charge need a modification of the licence. We can handle these for you each year.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I need a state or central licence?

It depends on turnover, production capacity, the kind of business and where you operate. Importers, businesses at airports and seaports, and head offices of businesses in more than one state need a central licence. We confirm this before filing.

How long does it take?

We file within 3–5 working days of getting your documents. The licensing authority then decides, often after an inspection. This commonly takes 30–60 days, but it depends on the department.

Will there be an inspection?

Often, especially for manufacturers. The officer checks hygiene, equipment, water, storage and records against FSSAI's requirements. We give you a checklist to prepare.

Is the government fee the same for every licence?

No. FSSAI's fee varies with the type of licence, the kind of business and the number of years. We tell you the amount before filing.

My turnover has crossed the registration limit. What now?

Apply for a state licence. We prepare and file it for you, and tell you what changes on your labels once it's granted.

Do I need a separate licence for each unit?

Generally yes. Each manufacturing unit, kitchen or warehouse is licensed for its own premises.
