How it works
- 1
Collect returns and books
We download the year's returns and statements from the portal, and you send your books and registers.
- 2
Reconcile the year
We compare GSTR-1 with GSTR-3B and the sales in your books, and the credit in GSTR-3B with GSTR-2B and your purchase register.
- 3
Settle the differences
Extra tax is worked out with interest for payment through DRC-03. Corrections made in the next year's returns are placed in the right tables.
- 4
Review with you
We share the draft return and a note on every difference. You confirm the figures before anything is filed.
- 5
File
We file GSTR-9, and GSTR-9C where it applies, verified by the authorised signatory with an OTP or DSC, and send you the acknowledgements.
What GSTR-9 and GSTR-9C are
GSTR-9 is the annual return for regular taxpayers. It brings together the year's sales, tax paid, input tax credit and reversals, and the corrections made in the next year's returns up to the November cut-off. It's due by 31 December after the financial year ends, unless the government extends the date. Composition taxpayers file GSTR-4 instead, and casual and non-resident taxable persons, input service distributors and tax deductors don't file GSTR-9.
GSTR-9C is a reconciliation statement that compares the turnover, tax and credit in your audited accounts with GSTR-9 and explains the differences. It applies above a turnover limit notified by the government, and since FY 2020-21 the taxpayer self-certifies it instead of getting a CA's audit certificate. Small taxpayers below a limit notified each year have been allowed to skip GSTR-9; we check the notification for your year.
Getting the annual return right
Once filed, GSTR-9 can't be revised, so the work is in the reconciliation before filing. The annual return can't be used to claim credit you missed during the year. Extra tax you find is reported in it and paid in cash through DRC-03, with interest.
Officers compare GSTR-9 with GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-2B and e-way bill data, and differences often lead to scrutiny notices. A late annual return attracts a late fee for each day, up to a cap linked to turnover, and the portal doesn't accept it more than three years after the due date.
Frequently asked questions
When is GSTR-9 due?
By 31 December after the end of the financial year, unless the government extends the date. For FY 2025-26, that's 31 December 2026.
Is GSTR-9 compulsory for small businesses?
Each year the government has exempted taxpayers below a notified turnover limit from filing GSTR-9. Whether the exemption covers you depends on the notification for that year, which we check before we start.
Can I revise GSTR-9 after filing?
No. There is no revised annual return, which is why we reconcile the year and share the draft with you before filing.
Can I claim missed input tax credit through GSTR-9?
No. Credit for a year must be claimed in GSTR-3B by 30 November of the next year. GSTR-9 only reports credit already claimed or reversed.
What if we find extra tax due?
You pay it in cash through Form DRC-03, with interest from the original due date, and report it in GSTR-9. Paying before the officer raises it usually avoids a show cause notice for that amount.
Does GSTR-9C need a CA's certificate?
Not since FY 2020-21. The taxpayer now self-certifies GSTR-9C. We prepare the reconciliation as a CA firm, and you sign it.
