Why GS1 barcodes
A barcode on a retail product carries a Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), usually printed as an EAN-13 barcode. GS1 numbers are unique worldwide, so retailers, distributors and marketplaces can identify your product without confusion.
Numbers bought from resellers, or made up, may not trace back to your company, and many marketplaces and retail chains check this. In India, GS1 India allots GS1 numbers to businesses directly.
One number for each product variant
Each product variant needs its own number: a different size, flavour, colour or pack quantity is a different product. A carton of 12 is a different item from a single pack.
GS1 India's fees depend on your turnover and how many numbers you need, and the subscription is renewed every year. If it lapses, the numbers are no longer validly registered to you, so keep it current.
Frequently asked questions
Who issues barcodes in India?
GS1 India, the Indian member of the global GS1 organisation. Its numbers are recognised by retailers and marketplaces around the world.
How many barcodes do I need?
One for each product variant you sell: every size, flavour, colour or pack quantity gets its own number. Plan for the products you'll add in the next year or two.
Do you print the barcodes?
No. We handle the registration and numbering. Your packaging designer or printer puts the barcode on the label, and we share the basic size and placement rules.
Are there yearly fees?
Yes. GS1 India charges a registration fee and a yearly subscription, both based on turnover and the number of barcodes. We tell you the amount before you apply.
Can I use the same barcode on different products?
No. Each number must identify one product. Reusing a number confuses retailers' systems and can get your listings rejected.
Do I need a barcode to sell online?
Most marketplaces ask for a GTIN in many categories, though some allow exemptions for certain brands or products. A GS1 barcode is the dependable way to meet the requirement.
