Add GST to a base price, or take it out of a price that already includes it — split into CGST and SGST, or IGST.

GST rate

The GST Council has been rationalising rates — from 22 September 2025 most items moved to 5% or 18%, with 40% for a few luxury and sin goods. Check the current rate for your item before you rely on it.

Supply

Supplier and place of supply in the same state: CGST plus SGST (UTGST in a union territory without a legislature), each half the rate.

How it is worked out

Adding GST. GST = amount × rate ÷ 100, and the total is the amount plus GST. Within a state, half the rate is CGST and half SGST (or UTGST).

Removing GST. When a price includes GST, the amount before GST = price × 100 ÷ (100 + rate). For 18%, that is the price ÷ 1.18; the difference is the GST.

Which tax. The place of supply decides it: in the same state or union territory as the supplier, CGST + SGST (or UTGST); anywhere else, and on imports and supplies to SEZ units, IGST.
