Professional tax registration

Professional tax is a state tax on professions, trades and employment, capped by the Constitution at ₹2,500 a year per person. In states that levy it, a business enrols to pay its own tax and registers as an employer to deduct it from salaries. We check what your state needs, apply for both and set up the payment routine.

Enrolment and registration

Most states that levy professional tax issue two certificates. Enrolment is for a business or professional paying their own tax each year. Registration is for an employer, who deducts the tax from salaries and pays it to the state.

A company or firm with staff usually needs both. Each state sets its own slabs, due dates and returns, and some collect professional tax through local bodies instead.

Which states levy it

States such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh levy professional tax. Many others, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan, don't.

If you have offices in more than one state that levies it, you register in each, and deduct for each employee under the rules of the state where they work. Late registration, payment or returns attract interest and penalties under state law.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need professional tax registration?

Only if your state levies it. If it does, employers register to deduct it from salaries, and most businesses and professionals also enrol to pay their own.

How much is professional tax?

Each state sets its own slabs, usually based on salary or the type of business, up to the constitutional limit of ₹2,500 a year per person.

Who deducts it from employees' salaries?

The employer, monthly or as the state requires, and pays it to the state along with a return.

We have staff in two states. What do we do?

Register as an employer in each state that levies professional tax, and deduct under that state's slabs for the staff working there.

Do professionals need to enrol?

In most states that levy it, yes. Doctors, lawyers, CAs, consultants and other professionals enrol and pay a yearly amount, even with no employees.

What if we registered late?

Register as soon as you can. States charge interest and penalties for late registration and payment, and we help you work out any arrears.
