Documents you'll need
For cancellation
- Access to the GST portal
- Reason for cancellation and the date from which it applies
- Stock of inputs, semi-finished and finished goods, and capital goods on that date, with values
- Proof of the merger, transfer or change in constitution, if that is the reason
- Death certificate and legal heir documents, if the proprietor has died
For revocation
- The cancellation order and any show cause notice before it
- Sales and purchase details for every period with an unfiled return
- Proof that the business runs from its registered address, such as the rent agreement, a utility bill and photos
You upload these from your order page after you pay. Scans or clear phone photos are fine.
How it works
- 1
Review
We check pending returns, tax, late fees and the stock you hold, and confirm whether cancellation or revocation is the right step.
- 2
Clear the backlog
Pending returns must be filed and dues paid before revocation, and should be cleared before cancellation too. We quote separately if there are several.
- 3
Apply
We file Form GST REG-16 to cancel, or Form GST REG-21 to revoke, with the reasons and supporting documents.
- 4
Officer's decision
The officer may ask questions or issue a notice, which we answer. The order is the officer's to pass.
- 5
Final return
After cancellation, we file GSTR-10, the final return, within three months of the cancellation date or the order, whichever is later.
Cancelling your registration
You can apply to cancel if the business has closed, been transferred or merged, changed its constitution in a way that needs a new PAN, or no longer has to be registered. If a proprietor dies, the legal heir can apply. Once you apply, the registration is treated as suspended, so you stop issuing tax invoices.
On cancellation you pay an amount equal to the input tax credit on inputs and on semi-finished and finished goods in stock, and on capital goods (reduced for the time they've been used), or the tax on their value, whichever is higher. Your liability for earlier periods stays even after cancellation. Within three months of the cancellation date or the order, whichever is later, you file the final return, GSTR-10.
When the officer cancels it, and revocation
An officer can cancel a registration, for example when returns haven't been filed for a long period or the business isn't found at its address. The officer first issues a show cause notice (REG-17), and your reply to it matters, so don't ignore it.
If the registration has been cancelled, you can apply for revocation in Form GST REG-21 within 90 days of the cancellation order, after filing all pending returns and paying the tax, interest and late fees. The officer then restores the registration or, after hearing you, rejects the application. If the time limit has passed, an appeal may be the remaining route; we'll tell you what's open in your case.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cancel if I still have stock?
Yes, but you pay an amount equal to the input tax credit on that stock, or the tax on its value, whichever is higher. We work this out before you apply.
How long does cancellation take?
We apply within a few working days of getting your details. The officer then reviews the application and may ask questions before passing the order; how long that takes depends on the officer.
Do I need to file returns after applying?
You file all returns up to the date from which cancellation is sought. The registration is suspended after that, so you don't issue tax invoices, and after cancellation you file one final return, GSTR-10.
My registration was cancelled because I didn't file returns. Can it be restored?
Often it can, if you act in time. You file the pending returns, pay the tax, interest and late fees, and apply for revocation within 90 days of the cancellation order. The officer decides.
Can I revoke a cancellation I applied for myself?
No. Revocation is only for a registration the officer cancelled on their own. If you cancelled voluntarily and need GST again, apply for a new registration.
Is there a government fee?
There is no fee to cancel or revoke. The amount on closing stock, any pending tax, interest and late fees are paid at actuals.
