- 3
Employer code
ESIC allots a 17-digit employer code number, which you quote on every contribution and return.
- 4
Employees
We register each eligible employee with their family details and generate their e-Pehchan cards.
- 5
Monthly routine
We explain how the monthly contributions are paid, or take them on under our PF and ESI return service.
Who ESI covers
ESI now comes under the Code on Social Security, 2020, which took effect on 21 November 2025 and replaced the earlier ESI Act; ESIC still runs registration and contributions on its portal. It applies to establishments with 10 or more employees in areas where the scheme has been implemented. Within a covered establishment, employees whose wages are within the ceiling notified by ESIC are insured.
Employer and employee both contribute a share of the employee's wages each month, currently 3.25% from the employer and 0.75% from the employee. Rates and the wage ceiling are set by notification, and we use the current ones when we set you up.
What employees get
Insured employees and their families get medical care at ESI dispensaries and hospitals, and cash benefits during sickness, maternity and disablement from employment injury. Dependants get a pension if an employee dies from an employment injury.
Each employee gets an insurance number and an e-Pehchan card. New joiners must be registered when they join, so the employer keeps the ESIC records current every month.
Frequently asked questions
Is ESI registration compulsory?
Yes, if you have 10 or more employees and ESI has been implemented in your area. Once covered, the establishment stays covered even if the headcount falls later.
Which employees are covered?
Those whose wages are within the ceiling notified by ESIC. Employees earning more are outside ESI. We check each employee's wages when registering.
Is there a government fee?
No. ESIC registration is free. Once registered, you pay contributions each month.
Is ESI the same as health insurance?
It works much like it, with medical care and cash benefits, but it's a statutory scheme run by ESIC. Eligible employees can't be left out in favour of a private policy.
Can a company get ESI registration at incorporation?
Yes. The AGILE-PRO-S form filed with SPICe+ includes ESIC registration. If yours didn't, or you aren't a company, we register you on the ESIC portal.
When are contributions due?
Every month, by the due date ESIC sets, paid online through the ESIC portal. Late payment attracts interest and damages.
