Trademark renewal
A registered trademark lasts 10 years from its application date and must be renewed every 10 years to stay on the register. We check the register entry, file the renewal on Form TM-R, and follow it until the register shows the new expiry date. You can renew in the year before expiry, or within six months after it with a surcharge.

How it works
- 1
Share the registration number
We pull the register entry and check the expiry date, owner details and classes.
- 2
Fix the record if needed
If the owner's name or address has changed, or the mark has been assigned, we tell you what has to be recorded before or with the renewal.
- 3
File TM-R
We file the renewal and pay the government fee at actuals, with the surcharge if the registration has expired.
- 4
Confirmation
We track the renewal until the register shows the new expiry date and send you the record.
When to renew
A trademark is registered for 10 years from the date of application and can be renewed for 10 years at a time, any number of times. You can file the renewal in the year before the registration expires. The Registry sends a notice to the registered owner before expiry, but don't rely on it reaching you if your address has changed.
If the registration expires without renewal, you can still renew within six months after expiry by paying a surcharge. After that, the Registrar can remove the mark from the register.
If the mark has been removed
A mark removed for non-renewal can be restored and renewed only within a limited time and on conditions the Registrar sets, and someone else may have applied for a similar mark in the meantime. It's far simpler to renew on time.
Renewal is also a good time to check the record. If the owner's name, address or legal form has changed, or the business has been sold, record those changes so the renewal stands in the right name.
Frequently asked questions
How early can I renew?
Up to one year before the registration expires.
My trademark expired last month. Is it lost?
Not yet. Within six months after expiry you can renew it by paying a surcharge with the renewal fee. Contact us as soon as you can.
Is the renewal fee per class?
Yes. The government renewal fee is charged for each class in the registration.
Can I change the logo or the goods at renewal?
No. Renewal keeps the registration as it is. A new logo usually needs a new application, and the goods or services can be narrowed but not widened.
Do I need to show proof of use to renew?
No. You need only the registration details and the owner's current name and address. Keep records of use anyway, since a mark left unused for five years in a row can be challenged for removal.
What happens after renewal?
The renewal is recorded and the register shows the new expiry date. Keep the record with your registration certificate.
